Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a structured program which teaches the principles of mindfulness and how to apply them to deal more effectively with stress, illness, and the demands of daily life. The MBSR program was originally developed at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D. He and his staff have trained other practitioners and teachers who have established independent MBSR programs throughout the United States and the world. Research has shown that MBSR is a helpful adjunct to conventional treatments for a variety of medical and psychological conditions and symptoms.

The Insight Center offers the complete and original MBSR curriculum based on Dr. Kabat-Zinn's U-Mass Medical Center model. The program teaches mindfulness through body awareness exercises, sitting and walking meditation, and gentle hatha yoga. It is taught in a group format. The MBSR Program lasts eight weeks, with weekly two-and-a-half hour sessions, and one all-day Saturday session. Each participant has an individual interview with the program instructor before the program. Daily at-home practice is required, and practice CDs are provided for this purpose. The MBSR Program is demanding, and requires a strong commitment from its participants to work on a daily discipline of meditation and relaxation over the eight weeks of the course. But it can be pleasurable, empowering, and extremely relaxing.
